Careers and Higher Education Fair 2016

The Templer Academy Schools Trust held its annual Careers and Higher Education Fair at Newton Abbot Racecourse and Conference Centre on the evening of Monday 11th April. Now in its tenth year the event was a resounding success.

The aim of the event is to inform, encourage and raise awareness of career options available to the students in our community. It is important that they have the opportunity to explore the career pathways and options nationally, as well as those locally.

The event was very well supported by students, parents, staff and governors from Coombeshead Academy and Teign School (the Trust secondary schools) and other local secondary schools who had been invited to the event.

In excess of 1500 visitors made for a very busy evening for over 200 plus exhibitors, manning 86 stands, many of whom have supported this popular event since its inception as a STEM specialist Careers Fair at Teign School ten years ago.

Exhibitors came from Higher and Further Education, industry and the service sector, together covering an impressive range of career options and education provision.

For students looking for Post 16 options in Newton Abbot all education providers were in attendance showing the range of courses on offer across the town from specialist provision, A Level and vocational courses.

The evening proved to be an excellent vehicle for the Trust schools to work collaboratively for the benefit of all the students in our community. The Trust wishes to thank everyone involved in the Careers and Higher Education Fair for their commitment and interest in helping secure our students’ futures.

Our thanks also go to local sponsors Waitrose and Tesco and the team at the Racecourse and Conference Centre for allowing us to use their excellent facilities.

Feedback from delegates who attended the evening is testimony to its success;

An interesting parent response was, “This is so much better than researching online!” Coombeshead Expressive Arts teacher Amy Pearce commented, “What a fabulous range and variety of providers with so much on offer for the students. I was so envious of them for having this opportunity!”

Spokesperson for the Templer Academy Schools Trust, Communications Manager Vanessa New said, “The response from both visitors and exhibitors has been overwhelmingly positive. The Careers & Higher Education Fair has now established itself as a key event in the school year.”

Year 9 student Kaarya Ganesan from Coombeshead Academy recounted her experience of the evening, “I went to the Princes Trust first and British Ceramic Tile before visiting the colleges. I liked Bridgwater College as they had lots of options. I went to Cardiff and Cambridge Universities and then looked at apprenticeships and the Skills Agency. Everyone was so friendly, I got lots of very useful information. It has inspired me to push myself to get good grades.”
